Significantly less disgusting than friendship bread

So-called “friendship bread” is a ball of dough you cultivate, add ingredients, split off some of the dough, give away some of the dough, make bread, and keep a little bit around to cultivate for the next batch.  Whoever gets some of the dough then does the same.  I guess the idea is there is some sort of continuity between all these loaves of bread everywhere though (oh dear god forgive me for saying this) time and space.1

Whenever I think about friendship bread I throw up a little bit in my mouth.

What I find far more interesting…  is the idea that someone could have a RepRap where every plastic part came from a different machine.

  1. I don’t profess to be an expert on friendship bread.  I could have some of the finer points wrong. []

Foam core build platform, covered in blue painters tape

As the caption suggests, this is just the foam core build platform placed on top of the wooden platform and taped down with blue painter’s tape.  The tape has worked very well for my first PLA print, the teapot.  I’ll try this new platform setup in a little bit.

Shopping list

I’ll need a few extra things to get going:

  • Superglue for the idler pulley and bearing
  • 3-in-1 oil for the rods (I need to clean the threaded rods).  It will be a little bit of a pain to pull them out of the MakerBot, but I want to make sure I’ve done everything I can to make the robot work properly.
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Daft Punk

Toasted WordPress

I’ve been tinkering with this website trying to move it to a different domain – MakerBlock.com rather than MakerBlocks.com.  (I like both names, but have a slight preference for MakerBlock).  In any case, since I’m rather used to working with WordPress I figured I’d just dive into the MySQL tables and start changing stuff.

This doesn’t work quite as well as you would think it would.  :)  For anyone who is looking to move a WordPress website from one domain (or subdomain) to another, I highly recommend using Domain Name Changer.

Lesson learned.  I’m just a little bit smarter today!  Woo hoo!

Second Law, Schmecond Law

Unfortunately, in the haste to get the MakerBots out the door for the holidays the guys at MakerBot left out opto-endstop kits on some shipments.  These guys have been super responsive even before I bought a kit from them, so I’m not that concerned.  Frankly, it’s a little bit of a relief that I can skip the soldering stuff for now and move on to some of the pulley making steps.

In any case, as I understand it, these are not vital to the proper functioning of the MakerBot and that they’re really just a failsafe if the ‘bot forgets the second law of robotics.
