BristleBots – Easy DIY STEM/STEAM Robots

If you don’t know who EMSL are, you’re missing out.  Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories is a small family owned DIY electronics business in the California Bay Area with a deep enduring commitment and support for open source software, open source hardware, educators, and Makers.

And they are genuinely good people.  Their blog is an incredible resource for anyone from beginners in crafts and electronics to grizzled veteran engineers.  There are free tutorials, resources, and tons of kits for every level.  I’ve purchased several of their kits and cannot recommend their products highly enough for the material quality, comprehensive (and occasionally playful) instructional materials, and support – including a robust community and forum.1

Since our family is home an awful lot these days, we’re always looking ways to keep our kids curious, engaged, and occupied.  Our next project is the EMSL “BristleBot.”2

Their write up and video tutorial will provide you with all the information you need to help build a very tiny zippy robot from things you probably have around the house. 3  There’s a lot to talk about with your kids here – from basic electrical connections, off-center motors, springiness of the bristles, to how the directions of bristles affect the robot’s travel.

A box of parts to make enough for a whole classroom might be about $50 (or less) if you could buy parts in bulk.  But, if you only need a handful of BristleBots for your household, you could taking things apart for motors, old toothbrushes for bristles, common coin cell batteries for free/nearly free, maybe adding some matchbox car or marble run tracks for BristleBot trails or a cardboard box for a battle arena.

ProfileMaker update

I’ve made a few slight modifications to ProfileMaker.

First, after testing it seems that the apparent optimal W/T is approximately 1.67 or so.  Using this value for target W/T setting has lead to my cleanest and most sturdy prints.  Admittedly, I haven’t done proper science-testing to determine the optimal value – but I do not believe it could be far off.  Thus, I’ve removed this setting option and ProfileMaker will calculate the optimal thread width based upon a W/T value of 1.667 and whatever layer thickness you choose.

Secondly, I’ve removed the automated profile creation system.  Not many people seemed to be using this and this feature gets quickly outdated a new versions of ReplicatorG are released.  While the five critical settings provided by ProfileMaker have been unaffected by recent changes to ReplicatorG’s Skeinforge engine, lots of the other settings have been juggled around.  Skeinforge is too much of a moving target for me to try to keep up.  Ideally, you’ll find a good set of profile settings you like and will still be interested in using ProfileMaker to adjust the five critical settings.

It is my hope that by making these minor changes everyone will have an easier time using ProfileMaker and get better results.

ProfileMaker – Crippled, but back…

At least for the time being.  :)

I’m guessing that only about 10% of ProfileMaker users were using the complete profile feature.  For those of you who didn’t use it, this feature would use your inputs to create an entire Skeinforge profile, zip the whole thing, and e-mail it to you. 1  However, this 10% use case was probably accounting for a huge portion of the server load.

I’ve disabled the e-mail-a-profile feature to see if this will help.  Let’s cross our fingers and hope!  As a friend of mine always says, these are good problems to have.

Congratulations Renosis!

Renosis and I had a friendly dispute.  We decided to settle it by challenge – a Maker challenge.

I have a feeling Maker disputes are different from other kinds of disputes.  Even though we were competing against each other, we still consulted each other, bounced ideas off one another, and, I like to think shared in each other’s successes.  But, at the end of the day, he got more Likes for his epic Gangsta Chess Set than I got for my Fez Pezsta.

Would you like to know what the dispute was?  Of course you would!

Renosis was sending me two of his extra bearings and a few extra hardware bits for the X-Axis Follower and wouldn’t accept any payment in exchange.  We were both being stubborn about that point – he didn’t want to accept the $11 and I was insisting on paying.

If I won he would accept the $11.  If he won, I would not pay him $11.  :)

Plastic wishlist

Glow in the dark plastic.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea of fluorescing red ABS.1  But, how sweet would glow in the dark plastic be?

It’s like making all of your printed plastic objects twice as useful, since they can be seen at night as well as day.

I completely missed the Bay Area Maker Faire.1

I did everything I could to make sure I would be there.  I bought an advance two-day family pass.  Even though I live in the Bay Area I booked a local hotel just so we could get there that much earlier and stay that much later.

Alas, everyone in my family caught a nasty bug and we’re still laid up.  At least I was able to give away our tickets as we drove away from the hotel.

In the meantime – did you go?  What did you see?  What did you learn?  Please let me live vicariously through you!
