I CAN’T WAIT!!!

I’ve been really looking forward to the MakerFaire (Bay Area) for – oooooh – probably about a year now.

Last year was the first time I had attended and I got to see a giant bronze snail car, a Victorian house car, the steampunk area, a giant set of rotating metal wings, pneumatic rockets, LCD guitars, numerous R2D2’s, a chunk of the Long Now clock (the very same which inspired Stephenson’s book Anathem), bicycle powered rock bands, a CandyFab, and, of course, a fully operational MakerBot complete with the MakerBot guys printing off amazing things.

I looked, I saw, I even hoola hooped.  And I’m looking forward to seeing all new amazing stuff.

SF WordCamp?

I really like WordPress and was kinda hoping I’d make it to SF WordCamp this year.  Unfortunately, it is not to be.  If you’re going, I’ve got a silly frivolous request –

If you spot one of those WordPress “W” stickers, would you snag one for me?

I’m getting a new laptop (actually, I’m getting an old relatively unused laptop from someone else) and I’d like to slap an official WordPress, MakerBot, PHP, and MySQL sticker on it.

Seems like only yesterday

While searching up a link to the eD’s first sketch for the Mendel I realized that post is about a year and a half old.  That made me wonder how long I’ve been interested in the RepRap projected.  I first read about it in a SlashDot article back in April 2008.  I remember thinking that a DIY level 3d printer was just a fantasy.

Now, I’ve got one sitting in the next room and objected printed with it all throughout my home.  (Several window latches, a sugar packet holder, various little toys, etc).

What’s even funnier is realizing that I’ve been boring my friends and family with RepRap talk for more than a year and a half as I enthusiastically gushed about the possibilities of printing ANYTHING on a homemade printer than can make copies of itself.

11 year old builds 3D printer

Um.  Wow.  Justin, you rock.  This 11 year old kid apparently designed and built his own 3D printer.

Forrest Higg’s vision has just come true!  He’s written several times about how he wants to design and build a system that a reasonably bright 12 year old could build.  I guess we should have known it would have taken a 12 year old to design such a system in the first place.

Thanks to Fabbaloo for the link!
