An honorary Duggar

Nophead’s Mendel1 has produced 15 sets of Mendel parts, and is hard at work on it’s 16th!!!  My understanding is that it would take about 60 hours to print a full set of Mendel parts.  I have to admire anyone who prints up Mendel/Mini-Mendel parts because of the amount of dedication it would take to do so.  After spending 90 hours2 printing something, I don’t know that I could part with it.

My point is that we really have guys like Nophead, Spacexula, and Cyrozap3 to thank for cranking out parts and pushing replication forward.

I hereby bestow upon you gentlemen the Duggar medal of continuous replication.

  1. I don’t know if he’s named it yet – so I’ll call it Anna until he corrects me. []
  2. I’m just assuming it would take me 50% longer since I don’t know what I’m doing… []
  3. Dude, I realized yesterday I’ve been misspelling your name.  I’ll go back through and fix that – sorry! []

WordPress II

I tend to see the world through WordPress eyes.1 When I find (or write) a clever bit of script that would be useful to a WordPress website, I tend to convert it into a WordPress plugin.  I did this with my PieChart Plugin and a few other knick-knacky plugins.

I just noticed Cryozap Cyrozap‘s Amazon affiliate link converter PHP script.

It occurs to me that it would be relatively easy to build a WordPress plugin that searches through a post/page, finds Amazon links, and then turns them into affiliate links…  I think this could be useful in several of my sites, actually.

  1. You see, the subject is WordPress double-I, as in WordPress I’s, as in WordPress eyes… []

Cyrozap – ARE YOU HAPPY NOW???

Cryozap Cyrozap, I mean, is there anything else I can get you?  A moist towelette?  A cotton shammy?  Perhaps you would like a bloom from the titan arum?1  Shall I bottle the nuance of the Mona Lisa’s smile for you?  Please just tell me what the heck you want and I will just do it!!!

What will it take to make you happy???

Kidding aside –  thank you.  Apparently the mobile version of MakerBlock went quite mad when viewed on a mobile device.  I’ve yanked out the mobile version – so hopefully it will look a lot better now.

If you see a problem with the site, please let me know. 2

  1. By some reports, it blooms about once every three years in the wild. []
  2. I may make fun of you a little bit, but I will absolutely thank you as well. []

Blame Cyrozap

Cyrozap‘s recent vociferous comments about truncated feeds were basically on point.

He noticed that I had recently changed my RSS feed settings to serve up truncated posts, rather than full content.  I made this change in mostly because I was tired of dealing with content theft.  However, I’m reasonably sure this will probably not be an issue any longer. While the points made by those articles are certainly valid, I would point out that it is far easier to steal content from an RSS feed than it is to write a content scraper.  Having written both, once upon a time, I can attest to this from experience.  Truncated feeds may not be a deterrent to all – but it will deter those who are just using a WordPress plugin to suck down RSS content.

In any case, I left the RSS feed settings as they were – due to inertia and because I assumed no one would really notice.  But, since I haven’t had to deal with stolen content in a little while and at least one person prefers un-truncated feeds…  the long rambling RSS posts are back!

If you find my rambling babbling showing up in your RSS feed, well, you have Cryozap Cyrozap to thank.  :)
